NES Emulator on iPhone 3G! (3Gweek)

For those who miss the glory of playing NES Emulator in iPhone, Jonathan Zdziarski has enhanced its capability to run the application on top of iPhone 3G! What an exciting news to hear. He definitely knows what game fans want.

The application can be downloaded since July 20, only 10 days after iPhone’s launch day. I salute him since be able to hack the handset that fast. The application called NES.app, emulates the Nintendo hardware environment into iPhone 3G. The emulator uses NESCore, obtained from pNESx and InfoNES.

To run the games, after installing the NES.app, we need to load the games’ ROM image. Although creating this one great application, the author himself does not support piracy. I don’t know what the state means. Is there any “legal ROM image” out there?

Hey, I read about it in the Internet and it does! It is actually legal to have a Nintendo ROM image, if and only if purchased from Nintendo’s official Virtual Console (for Wii).

Anyway, here are the features of NES.app:

Multitouch: Use the directional pad + A + B, or other combinations
Zapper Tap: Tap objects on the screen to shoot them
Full Screen: Enlarge your NES picture to the max possible
Save State: Save an instant snapshot of your game and come back to it later
Game Genie: Use Game Genie cheat codes

3GWeek Review: One week with Nokia E71 (3Gweek)

It has been a long while since I am feeling this excited over a new piece of gadget. My last one was when I get Palm Vx way back in 1999 (that is a looong time ago). I have been eyeing on Nokia E71 for a while since the spy shots start leaking in the blogosphere and official announcement by Nokia last June. Nokia E71 impressive specifications and form factor seems to suit my needs, and I must say that I am not disappointed with the product after using it for 1 week now.

I got my Nokia E71 last Monday (07/07) and have been playing it ever since. You already seen enough review from other blogs on E71 size, specs, comparison, etc., so I will not waste space and repeat them again here. This post will be more of my sharing and experience of putting the E71 to the actual day-to-day usage test during the past 1 week. Enjoy!

Build Quality

The first impression you get for E71 is stylish and solid build quality. Most part of the unit is covered with metal, except the glass covered LCD and the rubbery keypad (or should we call it keyboard?). You cannot appreciate how slim is this device from looking at photos or brochures. You need to put it in your hand and feel it yourself. It is not too light to make it feel cheap, or too heavy to make it uncomfortable to carry. It is the right size and weight even to put in your shirt pocket.

One drawback of the metal casing is that the back cover easily becomes fingerprint and smudge magnet, especially if you are holding it with oily hands.

Typing & Keyboard

E71 comes with a full QWERTY keyboard. The small sized keyboard surprisingly is very comfortable as each of the buttons are raised and made of rubber material similar to E90 with good tactile feedback. For you having concern on the smallish E71 keyboard size, don’t worry. I must say that E71 is having the most comfortable QWERTY keyboard as compare to any similar devices I’ve ever tried.

Nokia also equipped E71 with the new T9 text predictive, which is an upgrade from previous version. The new T9 is now with ability even to help you with the proper word completion (similar to the feature you already seen in Windows Mobile OS). The feature is quite fun, but I ended up turning it off since I found as having the full QWERTY keyboard I no longer need any T9 assistance.

There’s 4 default application buttons on the same level with the D-pad, with icons representing the most used applications. i.e. Home, Calendar, Contact & Messaging. Unlike previous version, in E71 you are allowed to set the button and make your own shortcuts. 3 out of the 4 buttons can be customized for short key press and long key press, making it become 6 shortcuts. E.g. short keypress of Messaging button will call up SMS and long keypress will call up E-mail.

Interface

The device is running S60 3rd edition FP1 with some extended features (to be explained later), which is very solid and stable. Over the 1 weeklong usage I never had any system crash yet, except isolated cases when I tried installing some incompatible Nokia Beta Labs applications.

Ability to quickly navigate between menus and jumping from one application to another is a very important factor for me. This is the reason for me switching from previously N95 to N82 because of the slow response time between key presses. Nokia E71 is as snappy (or even faster) than N82. I think this is crucial as Nokia E71 as business machine need to empower the users to work faster, to be more productive and less device nagging. E71 passed my test on this with flying colors.

E71 also come with a feature called Switch Mode, which is new and first introduced in Nokia phones. Switch Mode allows you to set and switch between 2 different home screens, e.g. you can set a “Work” home screen work weekdays and switch to “Personal” home screen on weekends, so you do not have to look at all your email notification or meeting alerts on your screen when you are spending leisure time with family

The Home Screen also highly customizable. You can choose and set from as many as 15 standby plug-ins to be enabled in the home screen, e.g. show email notification, miss calls, to-do, radio, search, etc. Again another winner here!

Business Applications

Nokia E71 comes as a business phones, so the emphasis should be on the business applications, right? I found notably improvements done by Nokia in some of the areas, but also lacking in very important updates in some key applications.

Contact

Nokia had done good job in making the Contact application more intuitive. Once a contact is selected you can press right D-pad and it will reveal a pop-up listing all available mode to get in touch with selected contact, e.g. voice call, send text msg, send e-mail, send MMS, etc.

There’s actually a powerful feature, which allow you to do quick contact search from the standby screen, such capabilities usually known as Smart Dialing in Windows Mobile devices, whereas you type in alphanumeric characters and immediately they will list out possible matches against available contact. Unfortunately Nokia forget to enable this function for the E71 firmware they release in Asia, promised it will be available soon via firmware upgrade. Arrrr…

Calendar

Major improvement in Calendar, as you can now have split screen mode similar like E90. Must admit that the previous Nokia Calendar application is pretty lame, luckily Nokia move to bring in this much needed improvement.

Messaging

For such excellent QWERTY device, the email application in E71 is a big disappointment. Not improvement was found as compare to previous models. We still getting the mediocre email client and still, with the IMAP4 auto-retrieval dropping connection problem.

Office applications

Another disappointment as Nokia E71 comes pre-installed with QuickOffice 4.1.35 with no support for MS Office 2007 formats. You need to upgrade to QuickOffice 5.0 to have Office 2007 compatibility, which will cost you another USD 40-50. Other office applications pre-installed including Adobe PDF reader, Zip, Dictionary, Converter, etc. I must point out that the Dictionary from Nokia allows you to download additional languages from Nokia website. New language packs are available for download (free) including Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, Dutch, Hungary, Hindi, Japan, Italian, Hebrew, etc.

OCR Scanner

I cheered when I found a pre-installed application in Nokia called Multiscan, which is a scanner/camera with OCR/character recognition software. The application allows you to take picture containing some writings and automatically convert them into editable text/numbers. The OCR software also allow functionality as business card scanner, automatically convert the scanned business card into vCard to be saved in your Contact. This is useful!

Other applications pre-installed in Nokia E71, some also pretty cool, like the Advance Call Manager (call filter, answering machine), Worldmate (travel application), Wireless Presenter, etc. too many to describe one by one here, but all quite nice.

Multimedia

Nokia E71 is segmented as business device, but it boosts adequate multimedia capabilities. The web browser support Flash 3 allowing you to watch Youtube clips online, the video codec had been updated to include H.264 support and play most MP4 format. Music playback also quite good with the build in speaker.
Nokia E71 got a FM tuner included and you can download the database for radio station channels for major cities around the world which I must say quite complete.

One thing annoys me is that the FM radio will work only if you plug in the wired headphone jack. Meaning I can use my Plantronic Discovery 855, stereo Bluetooth headset to listen to music player, but to listen to FM radio I must manually plug in a wired headset. Why Nokia?

The device comes with 3.2 megapixels camera, which is adequate for me. Camera works quite fast, took 2-3 seconds to standby or between snaps. Image quality is OK on well lit condition, but grainy for indoor or at night. E71 also comes pre-installed with Nokia Share Online 3.0, which makes it easier for you to upload photo, video or audio to online services (support Flickr, Ovi and Vox).

Map & GPS

Comes with the new Nokia Map 2.0 and A-GPS (network assisted GPS, giving you better location lock by leveraging the operator network infrastructure). Mine comes with a 3 months trial on the voice assisted navigation. The GPS locking also went well, taking between 10-15 seconds to get my location.

Connectivity

This device got every kind of connections you need, from WiFi, infra red (old school?), Bluetooth and USB. Unfortunately, the USB is using the micro UBS cable (meaning carry an extra cable), and it is only USB 1.1 standard (slow!). When you connect the USB cable, besides the usual PC Suite, Mass Storage, or Media Transfer, you also find a new option call “Connect PC to Web”.

If you select the last option, it essentially upload and install a Nokia Internet application to the PC which will allow the PC to connect to Internet using E71 as the modem. This is sure handy when you are in emergency need of Internet connection, just plug in E71 to any PC and it will take care of the rest.

Battery Life

During my trial, I abuse the E71 by installing/uninstalling various application, connect to different devices using Bluetooth radio, Internet browsing and large file download/upload via Wi-Fi (podcasting, flickr photo upload, ovi video upload, etc.) and not to mention my daily voice call which is quite intense as well. Nokia E71 battery able to give me over 2.5 days of continuous service. This is impressive since Nokia N95 only able to last 8-9 hours on similar torture and N82 survive for almost a day. I must say that battery in E71 at least last twice longer than N82.

Summary

I am very pleased and enjoy using Nokia E71 and I wouldn’t hesitate to say that it is one of the best phone ever come out from Nokia and one of the best phone I’ve ever used. It got the style, the speed, the complete functionalities, and the capabilities can even be further expanded using the vastly available Symbian third party software. And it all comes in a thin sexy unit, the smallest QWERTY device with the most functionality.

However still need improvement in its basic capabilities as business device, especially a much better email client, better push email integration, or instant messaging to name a few. Once Nokia able to achieve this, then we sure Blackberry killer and RIM should better be afraid.

Giga Om bought mobile computing blog, JKOnTheRun (3Gweek)

It is always nice to watch such thing like this. This is a moment when a blog founder should be the luckiest man ever in a day. Well you know, when your toil finally get its decent value. Yeah, that million of dollars dream had come true.

I am personally would love to congratulate James Kendrick and its fellow Kevin C. Tofel for their blog’s, JKOnTheRun acquisition by Giga Om. Although the deal has not been disclosed till now, I bet that this agreement would reach about a plenty of million.

The reason is pretty clear for me. Both Kendrick and Tofel are master at their own shoulders (… using mobile devices since they weighed 30 lbs). They admit themself with such tag line like that. Glorious! Aside from that, they still also maintain their relationship with 11.021 feeds subscribers and a 23,650 monthly visitors per June 2008 based on Compete Site Analytics. That number is equal to approximately 6% of its parent site, Giga OM which have already reached 387,370 monthly visitors.

State of the Mobile Web by Opera (3Gweek)

Are you still wondering what sites are most mobile web surfers are used to visit? My big thanks if you say yes on this issue. Today, Opera, the creator of most popular mobile browser on earth has just released a cool report on this case. They call it “State of the Mobile Web, June 2008“.

Their CEO, Jon S. von Tetzchner, said on that document,

We see that accessing the Web on mobile phones is a way for people who have never been able to access the Web, or have a difficult time finding convenient or affordable access, to get the Web on their terms. Mobile Web access allows many people to explore beyond the boundaries of their world, uncover new cultures and ideas, and let them add their voices to the conversation.

Well, for this moment on, I believe that Opera will still be the major mobile browser for most users in this world. But on the next decade, nobody can predict it very well since we are now facing the changing of mobile platform industry. You know what I mean; more SDK, new platform, more smartphones, the rise of concept phone, etc.

Wordpress, a blogging software or platform which many bloggers are count on it (including 3GWeek), just adding one cool new features dubbed as The WordPress for iPhone Application! Just like any other web based blogging app out there, this app will also give iPhone users features that can help them to blog easily.

This iPhone app works with Wordpress.com and self hosted WordPress version 2.5.1 or higher and the latest version of WordPress MU (Multiple Users). Thankfully, Matt Mullenwegg and Co’s didn’t leave the first generation iPhone in the shadow of its 3G one. Means that users are going to be able to enjoy this app without having to buy that $199 new device from AT&T. Oh yeah, they didn’t leave the iPod touch either.

I am one of the last of my kind. Born in the days of Pong, raised to the sound of Pac Man and grew up saving princesses in Mario Brothers, I continue to be one of the few who still plays games on a regular basis.

You look at today’s gaming culture in Indonesia and you will see a lot of online social games, such as golf game Pangya, shooting gallery
Gunbound or ridiculous dancing game Idol Street Online. I look at these games and weep.

What happened to all those kids who used to play Counterstrike or Quake or all those first-person shooters that provided an immersive perspective of the gaming world? These games not only increased your reflexes or hand eye coordination but they also promoted teamwork and a sense of community.

Of course, all games today do the same thing but something is missing.

I play games such as Team Fortress 2 or Day of Defeat: Source online, with other players across the region since there are very few in Indonesian players, and truly feel transported into another world.

Day of Defeat is a game where you play either an American or German soldier in World War II. Yet looking on the screen, listening to the crackling radio from command HQ and hearing the snow crunch under your feet truly makes you feel that you are in the battlefield. Like a digital game of capture the flag, you can spend hours in stalemate trying to capture that last 50 m to win the game, yet like in real life, sometimes you just can’t.

What’s more, other countries are playing games online and in competition against each other using top branded games such as Star Craft and Counterstrike. Unfortunately, we are lacking the human capital to compete at their level. So what are we going to do about it?

LG beat Motorola to be number 3 in the world (3Gweek)

What is the list of biggest mobile manufacturer in the world, based on their sales? If you said Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG, and Sony Ericsson respectively; you are now wrong. LG has managed to beat US manufacturer to grab number 3 position in global market share. They sold 27.7 million units, of which one third are sold in North America alone.

Wow, Motorola is fully beaten in their own country! The most popular LG handset is Viewty, which is sold 2 million units, followed by Venus (1.6 million) and Voyager (1.3 million). Yes, all three of them are begun with ‘V’ to make them more ear catchy. Besides mobile manufacturer, LG also well known as top electronic manufacturer.

In Q1, they beat Sony Ericsson for 4th position, now they outperform Motorola to be number 3! Will LG boosts their sales in last two quarters to surpass Samsung achievement as 2nd largest? I think with this superb innovation, nothing is impossible.

Daxian X908: Chinese’s 8 megapixels camera phone (3Gweek)

I have seen the great technology of China. They can create a phone–as sophisticated as Europeans–but with cheaper price–much cheaper. The only think I dislike is their manual book–quite uninformative if compared to their fellow other mobile makers.

Now, let’s talk about the new technology they brought. Sony Ericsson, LG, Samsung, and Motorola has (or going to) announce(d) their 8 megapixels camera, but all of them are not ready to be in the market. This China’s product, Daxian X908–I got the manufacturer name by using Google Translate–has brought the same technology with cheaper price. Only 1980 yuan for regular customers or less than US$ 300!

The specs are quite superb:

1000 Samsung G618 for Chinese athletes and coaches (3Gweek)

Yesterday, UV reported that the big Korean Samsung had donated 1000 handsets to 600 athletes and 400 coaches and staff for the Chinese Olympic Team. Fortunately, the handset is not an ordinary one. Yet it is a Samsung G618 with a special olympic ringtone and photos inside of its internal memory.

But that won’t be such a free lunch for Chinese. As an exchange, Samsung will have an authority to use Chinese athletes photos for their future ads. Yummy, just remember about the relation between Samsung and Chelsea!

Note:

I think this is such a cool CSR yet marketing strategy. In a tight market like China, a vendor should always keep and possibly increase their brand awareness. This event is one of the best way to do that since Olympic is one of the greatest event, after World Cup of course, for vendor to make a bold statement that they’re not just selling gadget or alike. Yet, they care about China and their patriotism, especially in sport.

Suggestion:

I think Samsung may want to try this to Indian Cricket Team or Indonesian Badminton Team.

Da Vinci Code’s cellphone (3Gweek)

I’ve never ever read Dan Brown’s magnum opus, Da Vinci Code before. So it will be a little difficult for me to describe and associate this cellphone here in 3GWeek. But never mind, I guess most of you has read the book at least for once.

And if only you read the book, please imagine what should Opus Dei’s guys did with this no-named-yet concept cellphone. Well, if you confuse to do it, Anthony James from Yanko Design has already help you actually. Here is the description.

This phone called “_______” (yup, it has no name) uses haptic technology to provide physical feedback for making a call. To turn it on…twist a section, to dial a number…twist a bunch of sections, to make an international call…break your wrist! There is no display and no buttons. The vibrate feature should prove popular with 50% of the world’s population.

And here is what the designer (Marc Schömann) said about his creation.

You turn the dial of every element to the desired cipher. If you entered the number you turn the first segment “to phone” (green LED). If you want to hang up the call you turn the first segment to “hang up” (red LED). The phone works without buttons and without a display and based on the old dial phones.

The Taiwan-based tech company, BenQ announced that they’re planning to release BenQ E55 in Taiwan at the end of this July. Based on its features, I can guarantee that this is a middle class cellphone.

Well just look it this:

The price is also logical for this clamshell. They charge it at about $230. Hmmm, I bet that they also want to launch and sell something like this one in Indonesia. Let just wait and see …

The current police force in the Liberian capital Monrovia is unable to combat an increase in violent crime, according to
a recent independent report and many of the city’s residents have created their own civil defence groups. I remember when the house care-taker, a fellow that works at our residential compound have to leave an hour early from work to join the vigilant patrol in his neighborhood. He also added that the group is equipping themselves with maschettis and wooden stick when combing streets within their area.

“Armed robbery is on the increase in Monrovia and we are not convinced that our police force can handle this type of crime,” said a community leader in the crime-prone suburb of Paynesville in the east of Monrovia where locals have formed patrols.

In another Monrovia suburb, New Kru Town, Nyononti Darbgeh, who supervises a civilian night patrol team there, said the situation is so bad, “We have no choice but to provide security for ourselves.”

The UN and Liberian police officials in Monrovia confirmed that crime has been steadily increasing in recent months with 47 reported cases of violent assault and theft from March to April.?? Just yesterday night, I was lucky enough to be given an opportunity to witness and documenting the on-going night patrols implemented jointly by the Indian Formed Female Police Unit and the Liberian National Police, strolling the night walking the dark passages, of the inner avenues and alleyway in areas like Sinkor, Congo Town and downtown Monrovia.

That particular night, there was 5 units of joint patrols, each unit consist of 4-5 Indian Police women officer, fully geared with helmets, protective vest and of course - the assault rifle and tear gas cannisters, while the Liberian counterpart remain unarmed. There are foot and vehicular patrols, executed every night covering most areas of the city of Monrovia led by the Indian female formed-police unit.

The UN peacekeeping mission in Liberia (UNMIL), which has been overseeing security in the war-ravaged country, started a programme in 2004 to train 3,500 police by June 2007 and police officials shared to the newspaper in Liberia that that number has since increased to 6,000.?? The national police is still undergoing series of on-going revitalization and the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has been assisting in implementing a national crime prevention strategy.

However, what I can sense through various people I talked with, they say that community leaders feel worried/concerned once UNMIL downsizes its 15,000-strong force which is planned to start in September 2008. I can imagine how the crime rate especially armed robbery would be worsening.

Addressing the issue, as put on the news that training of an elite team of 500 police officers will soon be undertaken by DynCorp, a private American security contractor. Whereby the Quick Reaction Unit [QRU], as the team will be called, will be trained by leading international police trainers to tackle-down armed threats.

As we walked further, in that night patrols, I also chatted with few of the Indian formed police women. One patrol leader said that crime actions normally takes place beyond midnight to dawn, ranging from small burglary to murder. The local people whom we passed on our patrol route expressed their appreciations to the fact that we are safeguarding their nights and able to sleep better.

Apart from the effort borne by UNMIL and the Liberian police authority, still the securing the neighborhood remain the sole responsibility of the people who lives there. What would you say if this same situation happens in your community, care to share your thoughts?

Chinese phone manufacturers have long history for making a dual SIM phone (either GSM-GSM or GSM-CDMA). The step is followed by Korean, then now the turn of US manufacturer to do the same way. Motorola–having big market in China–is launching its first dual SIM phone, VE75. Only for China market for now, don’t about launching it to the rest of the world.

It hasn’t stated clearly, but I assume that the phone may be able to handle dual GSM-GSM with dual ON–a feature that help you for not switching the phone off and restarting it when changing the CIM card. The phone price in China is about 3000 yuan or about US$ 440.

Nokia 5800 Tube on The Dark Knight (3Gweek)

Yes, I have watched Batman sequels–The Dark Knight–and admitted that it is one of the best I have ever watched. The scenario is fantastic and really touch spectators’ emotion. We are not going to spoil about this amazing movie. You can find it somewhere else. What I want to talk about is the appearance of Nokia’s said-to-be-iPhone-killer 5800 Tube on the movie.

Lucius Fox–the caretaker of Wayne Enterprises–was turning Nokia 5800 as a scanner; to locate and identify everything inside the building. The movie was shot in Hong Kong for this scene. This sophisticated feature is not for real. It is just for movie and I don’t think the technology has been implemented in real life.

I must say the phone shape is beautiful, really comparable to iPhone. It has not been launched yet, but definitely we are eager to see what features will be equipped by world largest manufacturer to this phone. Hopefully the phone will become to truly iPhone competitor.

While Sony Ericsson has suffered for the bleeding financial result, on the other hand, the mighty Nokia seems unstoppable. The Finn mobile manufacturer gain EUR 1.47 billion of operating profit from EUR 13.2 billion net sales.

Although the profit is declining 38% compared to last quarter, the sales is growing up. Of course, the majority sales come from low end phones, but high end phones also show great performance. Nseries are sold for 10 million units, while Eseries been bought for 2 million units.

Nokia now has more than 100 thousands employees worldwide with total sales about EUR 50 billions last year. Who can stop Nokia now from eating the global market? Can iPhone 3G be the next close competitor?
